2008 Edward I. Moses Walk/Run for Life at Appleton
Arena
Under sunny skies, with two
hundred eighty two participants, willing and helpful
committee members, extra helpers and support people
over $85,000 was raised in the St. Lawrence County
fight against cancer on the Ferguson Trail and out
of Appleton Arena on the St. Lawrence University
Campus. Twenty five individuals raised over $1000
each. They were: Robert Porter, Warren Dyke, The
Curtis family(Sami, EJ and Jim), Charles Saidel,
Karen Perry, Jodi Hopsicker, Shauna Wheeler, Jean
Hayes, Sylvia Bell, Nancy Garrand, Beulah Ritchie,
Clyde Shireman, Carrie Porter, Elaine Perry, James
Moses, Jodi Dingle, Jane Dyke, Craig Siddon, Elaina
Porter, Louden Porter, Wyatt Porter, Shirley Putman,
Declan Porter, Mattigan Porter, and Bridget
Gordinier.
Teams were
very present and loved ones were remembered by the
efforts of relatives, friends, and neighbors. Some
of the teams participating were the: 30 milers,
Ryan’s team, Team Terri, Team Bonnie C, Team Jenny
Mooney, Michela’s team, Rita’s Rooters, The Stumps,
Tops 102, Team Garrow, Team NYSARC, BBW Breast
Cancer Walk/Run, SPORT, Winter Cancer Treatment
Team, Team Joan, Massena Memorial Hospital Team,
Gouverneur Correctional Team, Claxton-Hepburn
Medical Center Team, VFW Ladies Aux Post 1231,
Healthy Living Partnership Team; students from:
Gouverneur Central, Edwards Knox Central, Seaway
Area Tech Center, Hermon Dekalb Central, Potsdam
Central, and Canton Central and several Kinney Drugs
Stores and many individuals were present for a day
of commitment.
Bob Porter
won the Douglas C. Hartson Sr. Award for the highest
individual fund raiser, Charles Saidel won the
Roscoe Stowell Jr. award for the most money raised
by a student, and Sauna Wheeler won the Duane Garrow
Award for most money raised by a person 12 and
under, The Richard E. Winter Award to the top group
went to the “30 Milers”, The Ryan Saidel Award for
top school group was won by Gouverneur Central
Students, the Bonnie Hayden Award for the second
highest school group went to students from Edwards
Knox Central, The Shirley Kirk Award went to Sylvia
Bell from Massena as the top Kinney Drugs fund
raiser, and the Taylor Cup was retained by Kinney’s
Store number 10. Nineteen grand prizes with a value
of at least $100 were won by: Jim Cunningham, Cindy
Gilbert, Dana Farley, Darren Wilson, Becky Perry,
Mark Brouillette, Paula BBurcume, and Brandow Garrow
won the “Gator” from LeBerge & Curtis John Deere.
The committee thanks all participants, especially
all donors, the many business sponsors of the event
and all the people that provided support to the
participants.
